Nature Ethics

Ethics is a big concept for little ones. Quite often when they start Kinder their opinion is whatever your opinion is :). As we talk about ethics they start to develop their own way of expression their opinions on things. Sometimes we think about the sides of an argument for heavy topics like the Underground Railroad and sometimes we think about lighter fare. We read the story:

It's the story of a little girl who starts out preserving a flower in her yard and protecting it from the lawnmower. That turns into pretty much creating a wildlife preserve in the backyard. It went along well with our plant theme this week.

So I asked my munchkins to write their opinions on whether it is right or wrong to mow the grass.

So you won't get fleas-he kind of has a point there. :)
what if their home was there.

wrong because animals can live there.

right because sometimes it gets tall.

It's right to cut the grass for the animals.

It is wrong to cut flowers.

Right-she wanted to live with beautiful birds.

Wrong so animals can live.

It is wrong because you will ruin nature.

  2. We often mow around our daisies:)
I love that you did this with your kids. This kind of critical thinking around books is what I did my masters project on! I'm definitely looking for this book so we can have a similar discussion. Thanks!

    1. I can remember trying to convince our father to mow around the dandelions! :) We didn't win that argument. Thanks Barbara-I think it's a cute story!
