I am a big believer in encouraging students to be creative. We say "be creative" especially when they write but when do they practice those skills. One thing I do periodically in our class is Divergent Art. The students are asked to turn a shape or line into something. Because Valentine's Day is coming up, we used hearts.

I Have a Dream
We have been learning all about Martin Luther King, Jr. and his contributions. We watched his famous speech and then I asked my students to write what their dreams were for the world.

If I Lived in a Fairy Tale
We discussed the "Rules" for fairy tales. There were charts detailing the patterns we saw-happily ever after ending, good vs. bad, beginning once upon a time, etc. Then I asked the students to write from the perspective of living inside a fairy tale. They also painted with watercolors to create their castles.

This year the prompt is one of my favorite Big Ideas--what is the meaning of life? This question requires some deep thinking and I liked how they came up with so many different creative answers.
