Anatomy of a Good Citizen

First of all, I have to share this. As anyone who ever reads my kids' writing knows, I very much encourage invented spelling. This one made me chuckle-she was writing the word "holiday":



Now don't you think every day should be a "holla" day! :)

Anyway, we are talking about good citizens in Social Studies this week. Now at the beginning of the year in our pre-service weeks, we did an activity I really enjoyed. We had to use scraps of things to make a little puppet of a teacher and then explain why we used what. Ours had a big cute bag to carry home papers to grade, a big smile, a big heart, etc. That was the inspiration for this activity. I asked the students to draw a citizen and then label the parts that a good citizen uses and what they use them for. I was thinking things like hands to pick up any trash in the park or mouths to talk to your neighbors. I knew this activity was going to be a little difficult for them because I was definitely asking them to apply their knowledge in a different way. Here's what they came up with:
